Above & Beyond: Tim Friel

  • May 18, 2026

Growing up in South Kansas City, Missouri, Tim Friel learned early that hard work matters. You earn what you get. And when you have the chance to help someone else move forward, you take it. Those beliefs did not just shape Tim’s career. They shaped his purpose.

Helping Remove Barriers, One Pedal at a Time

Today, that purpose is visibly played out in North Springfield through the North Springfield Betterment Association (NSBA). Tim has spent the past several years giving back, showing up and helping create new paths for others. Not because it is required, but because it matters to him.

“I started working at 15 and became a parent at a young age,” Tim said. “Those experiences gave me an understanding of the responsibilities and challenges many people are managing today.”

That lived experience drives his approach. He understands that not everyone grows up with the same support system. Not every child has someone showing them what is possible. Sometimes the difference between falling behind and moving forward comes down to something simple, such as resource access or encouragement.

That is where NSBA steps in.

Since becoming involved in 2021, Tim’s role has grown from attendee to board member, a position he has held for the past three years. The goal, however, has remained the same: give back to the community he calls home. He does that not only financially, but also through his time.

“It’s not always about money,” Tim said. “Sometimes it’s just about showing up and being a positive presence in someone’s life.”

That mindset is at the heart of one of NSBA’s most impactful initiatives, the R.O.A.D. Project. Short for Removing Obstacles to Academic Development, the program focuses on one of the most common and often overlooked barriers to success: transportation. When students don’t have a reliable way to get to school, attendance suffers. When attendance suffers, so does the opportunity available to the student.

By providing bikes and transportation support, the R.O.A.D. Project helps students show up consistently. It is a simple solution with a powerful impact. Better attendance leads to stronger learning outcomes. For older students, access to transportation can also open the door to part-time jobs, helping them support themselves and their families.

For Tim, this work is personal. It reflects the challenges he faced and the belief that the right support at the right time can change someone’s path.

It is not just about getting from point A to point B. It is about opening the door to what comes next.

That same spirit carries into other efforts. Through the NSBA island committee, Tim joins fellow volunteers early, sometimes as early as 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday, to clean up one of North Springfield’s busiest intersections. They plant flowers, pick up trash and create a space the community can feel proud of. As cars pass by and drivers honk in appreciation, it serves as a reminder that small acts of care matter.

There are also bike-build nights, hands-on and community-driven events where donated parts are turned into something meaningful. Each bike assembled is more than a completed project. It’s a tool, a resource and a step forward for someone who needs it.

That idea of removing barriers and creating opportunity carries directly into Tim’s role at The Bank of Missouri.

Through involvement in low- to moderate-income housing projects, Tim helps bring new opportunities in another way. These developments provide safe and stable housing for individuals and families who need a fresh start. Being part of the process, from planning to completion, adds another layer of purpose.

“Some people just need a chance at something positive,” Tim said. “To be part of delivering that to the community and then watching it fill up is incredibly rewarding.”

Tim provides a powerful example of what happens when personal passion and professional purpose align. At The Bank of Missouri, that commitment goes beyond individual effort. It becomes a shared focus on strengthening communities, expanding access and helping people move forward.

Every relationship. Every decision. Every solution.

All rooted in one belief: People come first.

When that belief shows up in real ways, it creates something lasting. Not just progress, but possibility.

For Tim, and for The Bank of Missouri, that journey moves forward every day.
