Above & Beyond: Sam Nassar

At The Bank of Missouri, our commitment to serving others extends beyond our branches and into the communities we call home. Through our Above & Beyond series, we're highlighting employees who dedicate their time and hearts to making a difference.

Making a Difference through Meaningful Relationships

For Sam Nassar, Commercial Banking Assistant Supervisor in Columbia, that commitment comes through her involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri, where she has served as a mentor, or "Big," to her Little, Makayla, for several years.

Sam's decision to become a mentor was rooted in her own experiences growing up.

"I wanted to be a mentor to somebody in the community and give them what I needed as a child," Sam said. "I knew if I went through things, somebody else was going through their own version of events and might need somebody to help guide them through that season of life."

Inspired by teachers who encouraged and challenged her to become the best version of herself, Sam wanted to provide that same support and perspective to a young person who could benefit from a trusted mentor.

That opportunity came through her match with Makayla.

"Makayla is intelligent, brave, encouraging, caring, and kind," Sam said. "We've built a relationship rooted in kindness, trust, and plenty of laughter. We celebrate life's little moments, support each other through challenges, and genuinely enjoy spending time together."

While Sam hoped to make a positive impact in Makayla's life, she says the experience has been equally meaningful for her.

"Watching her grow, seeing her strength, and sharing in her accomplishments has been an absolute privilege," she said. "I'm grateful for the relationship we've built and for the opportunity to be someone she knows she can count on."

One moment in particular reinforced the impact of their relationship. During a local television segment featuring Big Brothers Big Sisters, Makayla shared that when she has big feelings, she knows she can talk to Sam and trust that she will help her work through them.

"Hearing that made me feel like I was accomplishing exactly what I set out to do," Sam said. "I wanted to be a safe space for her and someone who could offer support and perspective when she needed it."

The experience has also shaped Sam personally. She says mentoring has strengthened her patience, communication skills, and appreciation for the importance of showing up for others.

"One promise I made to myself was that I would show up for Makayla and be present," Sam said. "Being a mentor has reinforced how much positive influence and encouragement can matter. Showing up matters. Listening matters."

Those lessons closely align with the work Sam does every day at The Bank of Missouri.

"In both my role at The Bank of Missouri and my involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters, success is built on trust and genuine relationships," she said. "Building a meaningful connection with my Little has taught me the value of being dependable, meeting someone where they are, and helping them discover where they want to be."

For anyone considering becoming a mentor themselves, Sam's advice is simple.

"Do it," she said. "You don't have to have all the answers or be a perfect role model to make a difference. Your time, consistency, and willingness to be present are some of the most important things you can offer. Mentoring has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life."

Through her dedication to mentoring, Sam is making a lasting impact on the life of a young person while strengthening the community we serve. Her commitment to showing up, listening, and investing in others is a powerful example of what it means to go Above & Beyond.
