The following types of transactions will trigger a text message alert. These transaction types are based on a set of criteria selected by The Bank of Missouri. They do not necessarily mean that your card has been used fraudulently, but you will receive a message each time these types of transactions occur.

  • International Transactions
  • Fuel Transactions
  • Authorizations Greater than $200
  • 6 or more Transactions in 24 hours
  • Card Not Present
  • Transactions Out-of-State
  • Transactions Declined Authorizations

How It Works

When a purchase that meets the monitoring criteria defined by The Bank of Missouri is made with your debit card, a text will be sent to you for review. If you think a particular transaction is fraudulent, reply immediately. An smsGuardian fraud analyst will block the card and follow up with you by phone. This added layer of security enables fraudulent activity to be identified and stopped immediately, which significantly reduces the likelihood that subsequent unauthorized transactions will occur.

If you receive this message and the purchase is legitimate, do nothing. If the purchase is fraud, reply with the code provided within the text message and your card will be blocked. If you do not reply to the text message within 12 hours, the transaction is considered legitimate and no further action will occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

I used my spouse's SSN because the account is in his/her name and it’s not working.

Resolution: You must use the card holder's SSN, not the Primary Account holder's SSN on the account(s) you have with us.

I’m getting alerts now, but they are not fraud, what do I do?

You will get an alert anytime you trigger one of our alert thresholds. You do not have to do anything if it is a valid transaction. You can simply ignore the alert. When you get an alert and it is not from something you purchased you can simply respond accordingly to the text you received to mark this as fraud to be investigated.

What happens if the cardholder doesn’t reply to a text?

Nothing. If no confirmed fraud response is received from a cardholder in 12 hours, the text message times out. If the cardholder does not respond to non-fraud texts, it will be considered a good transaction.

Who will the text appear to be from?

Each text sent by this service will begin with the phrase, "TBofM Guardian Alert."

If a cardholder responds “NO” to a text, how long will it take to block?

The text response is placed in the highest priority to the Risk Management/Fraud Department, and the next available analyst will hard block the card.

Do cardholders receive renewal notifications?

Yes, a renewal notification will be sent to the device (i.e. cell phone) six days prior to the expiration. Three renewal text message attempts will be made before the device is set to expire. If the cardholder does not respond, the device will be removed from smsGuardian upon expiration. If a cardholder renews the device multiple times, it will extend an additional year for each extra click. So if a cardholder wants to renew for five years, the cardholder will click the renewal button five times. When the cardholder clicks renew, they also have to send a message each time to the system similar to the original enrollment text message. They will give the 27576 short code to send a message similar to RENEW CWSEIA, for each time they renew. In this example they would reply to the short code five times. Some mobile service providers require that we send a 30-day subscription reminder message to their customers participating in the smsGuardian program. Cardholders will receive an alert message every 30 days reminding them of the subscription if their mobile service provider is Sprint, Nextel, Boost, or Virgin. The alert message will display as “Reminder: You have subscribed to Guardian transaction alerts for (The Bank of Missouri). Message and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. Reply STOP to cancel."
