Frequently Asked Questions About SBA Loans

How does the SBA program work?

A lender provides the actual loan to the borrower. The SBA guarantees a portion of the loan (between 50%-85% depending on the program). The SBA program allows lenders to make loans that may otherwise not meet conventional loan policies, such as start-ups, collateral, etc.

What is an SBA Preferred Lender?

As an SBA Preferred Lender, the SBA has authorized The Bank of Missouri to make lending decisions on their behalf. Loan applications are not sent to the SBA for approval, which means the process moves more quickly.

Who is eligible for an SBA Loan?

Most for-profit small businesses are eligible for an SBA guaranteed loan. This includes manufacturers, wholesalers, retail and service businesses as well as independent or franchise businesses. Retail and service businesses are eligible if they have sales (3-year average) not exceeding $6 million to $20 million, depending on the industry. Wholesalers and manufacturers are eligible if they have less than 1,500 employees, regardless of sales volume.

How much can I borrow?

Loan sizes typically range anywhere from $25,000 up to $5 million.

Are there any fees associated with SBA loans?

SBA guarantee fees are based upon the loan amount and may be financed into the loan.

  • Loans up to $150,000: No fees
  • Loans $150,001 - $750,000: 3% of the guaranteed portion of the loan
  • Loans $750,001 - $5 million: 3.5% of the guaranteed portion up to $1 million, and then 3.75% for guaranty above $1 million

How long does it take to get an SBA loan?

The time it takes to get an SBA loan depends on several variables, including how quickly we can get necessary paperwork and information back from the borrower. The process is much quicker and more streamlined at The Bank of Missouri because of our SBA Preferred Lender status, which grants us the authority to complete the entire loan process from start to finish. Our lenders also have loan authority to make decisions locally.
